A Look At The Global Book Publishing Industry

The London Book Fair is a gathering of all the participants in the global book publishing industry. The event held just this year, was well attended by 23,000 participants from 109 countries. This gathering aims to discuss and plan activities and measures that will address global book publishing concerns. Moreover, through this event, essential publishing information from different countries are also obtained. These information including statistics, qualitative and quantitative market data benefits many people and institutions including banks, book wholesalers and retailers, education and training companies, exporting companies, investors, media analysts, multinationals, printers and news agencies.

The increasing popularity of the Internet and the development of digital technologies and mobile communication have contributed to the growth of the global book publishing industry. Large publishing houses continue to dominate the industry and accounts for a larger percentage of industry profits. However, small scale publishing companies still exist to provide specialized services for market niches.

One of the emerging global book publishing trends is print-on-demand (POD) book publishing. This new technology minimizes the financial risks for authors and publishers whose books may not achieve high sales volumes. POD book publishing is a technology wherein new copies of a book are only printed after a book order had been received. This technology has only emerged after the development of digital printing which veers away from traditional printing technology using letterpress or offset printing. Because it is a cost-effective method, many self-publishing companies and vanity presses have adopted it as a business model. Due to this global book publishing trend, large book inventories do not have to be maintained or kept in stock in retail outlets and bookstores. The technical set-up in POD publishing is also less expensive than the traditional offset printing. Lastly, and perhaps, the most important benefit of this publishing trend is that it results to very little or no waste from unsold copies of books. Another publishing trend that has been identified by publishers all over the world is the continued integration of print and online publishing. Moreover, it has also been noted that online advertising of publishing companies have grown through the years. Despite this, it was noted that there is little advertising growth evident in traditional publishing sectors.

Moreover, data gathered from different parts of the world reveal that electronic publishing is slowly replacing print publishing. This could be attributed to the advancement of the Internet which has become an effective tool in sending and receiving electronic information. Many in the global book publishing sector fear that this would eventually lead to books becoming obsolete. The rapidly changing and developing electronic format also brought rise to issues about how copyrights of books are going to be protected given that they can be duplicated in a matter of seconds. Experts say that the future of global publishing will rely much on electronic publishing. It is anticipated that soon, people would be able to view electronic books in their preferred format and media. In fact, the Institute for the Future of Books at the University of Southern California are now developing a program that will ultimately allow people to create their own multimedia books.
